Foundations of Education

School library media specialists may not renew their licenses as Initial Instructional Library Media Specialists (901 license). Within five years after their initial licensure, they must have (1) completed a total of at least 39 credits of approved coursework, with at least 15 credits completed after the baccalaureate degree, or (2) earned a master's degree in an approved program. 

The Foundations of Education Department offers the following sequence leading to licensure as an Instructional Library Media Specialist (902).

1. All of the following courses are required:

EDMT 760 (Su): Advanced Production of Instructional Media 3 crs. 

LMED 730 (Su): Trends and Issues in Literature: K-12 3 crs. 

LMED 770 (F every 3 yrs): Administration of District Media Programs 3 crs. 

2. One of the following courses is required:

EDMT 608 (On demand): Computer Mediated Communication and Information Retrieval in Educational Settings 3 crs. 

EDMT 650 (On demand): Computers in Libraries and Media 3 crs. 

EDMT 670 (On demand): Computers in Education: Instructional Applications 3 crs. 

3. One of the following courses is required at a level other than that of the student's undergraduate major:

C I 730 (F, Sp): Curriculum in Grades 1-9 3 crs. 

C I 738 (F): Techniques of Curriculum Construction 3 crs. 

A student must be eligible for 901 licensure before undertaking coursework to meet the requirements for 902 licensure. Coursework to qualify for 902 licensure must be completed after the baccalaureate degree.
